We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Inside Machine Shop.
This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia.
We are looking for Diesel/Shafting Tech.
The hours are 0600 to 1445 M-F and some weekends.
Shift : ALL
Security Clearance : No Clearance
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)
Diesel Mechanics are responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safety, with the highest quality, in a professional manner.
Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job.
POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)
Typically has a High School diploma or equivalent plus five (5) years directly related experience.
POSITION DEMANDS (Experience)
Must have at least 5 years’ experience in diesel engine repair and or outside machinist
Knowledge of WAF’s a plus
Must be able to complete work with little guidance from Supervisor.
Basic knowledge of Standard Items a plus
Must have basic knowledge of shop equipment

Principle Responsibilities:
J4 Diesel / Shafting Mechanic
Understand WAF processes, ability to work a WAF from start to finish
Have a good working knowledge of standard items
Proficient using calibrated instruments, such as dial Indicators, micrometers, calipers, depth mics, etc.
Proficient at reading and using tech manuals, EATPS, PCP’s
Understand Diesel Engines and how they operate or be proficient in shafting, clutches and reduction gears.
Be proficient as a Lead Mechanic capable of guiding and training junior Mechanics with minimum supervision
Have the basic tools needed to perform work.
Experience in some of the following:
-Disassembling Diesel engine, clutches or reduction gears and testing.
-Removing shafts, propellers, and hubs.
-Foundation Chock work
-Engine Alignments/ Engine coupling work
J2-J3 Diesel / Shafting Mechanic
Working knowledge of WAF’s
Some experience working any of the following components:
-Experience using tech manuals or work packages
-Assisted in Diesel engine repairs
-Assisted in Reduction gear repairs
-Assisted in Clutch overhauls
-Assisted in removing Shafts and Propeller removal, and install.
- Use of calibrated instruments, such as dial Indicators, micrometers, calipers, depth mics, torque wrenches, etc.
J1 Diesel / Shafting Mechanic
Be able to follow instructions from a supervisor
Mechanical abilities / background
Willing to learn
Basic understanding of tools

UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Should be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards.
Must have reliable transportation.
Must be able to climb on and around ships and walk to other yard areas and requires extended periods of standing and walking (75%).
Inspections and work may require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding and observing co-workers using tools and equipment.
Lifting/carrying tools and parts weighing up to 50 lbs.

Standing, bending, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, handling, finger dexterity, feeling, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing required.
Selecting appropriate tools for jobs, as per trade classification.
Works in tight, confined work spaces on board ship and is exposed to varied temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions, fumes, odors and dust, vibrations from ship and hand tools, constant moving machinery, possible toxic and caustic chemicals.
May require up to 30% travel.
