Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Forestry is seeking to hire a part-time assistant prescribed fire leader for Summer - Fall 2023.
This position will be based at the VDOF Waverly office and work in the Department's Central and Eastern Regions, generally in Virginia's southern piedmont and coastal plain areas.
This position will assist the Department with the preparation, completion, and follow-up monitoring of prescribed fires on public and private land by assisting with all aspects of prescribed fire operations such as line construction, heavy equipment operation, use of ignition devices (e.
g.
fuses, drip torches), patrolling fire line, and the use of water and hand tools to perform mop-up.
Duties include: Prescribed fire operations, locating & constructing fire lines with bulldozers, coordinating and overseeing small crew of firefighters in line preparation or prescribed fire implementation, monitoring prescribed burns, and tool/equipment maintenance.
May be assigned to assist in suppression of wildfires when needed.
Must have the ability to negotiate different types of forested and rough terrain on foot, and the ability to travel within the state of Virginia and stay overnight on occasion.
Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of National Wildfire Coordinating Group S-130 Firefighter Training and S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior courses.
Experience in prescribed burning and/or wildland fire fighting.
Must have valid drivers license.
Have the ability to work in a sometimes stressful environment.
Experience supervising employees.
Additional Considerations:
Completion of NWCG S-212 power saw course.
Virginia Certified Prescribed Burn Manager.
Possess Virginia class B or A Commercial Driver’s License.

Must pass moderate physical fitness test, per Federal guidelines.
The test consists of walking 2 miles in 30 minutes carrying a 25-pound pack.
