Description
The City of Norfolk’s Department of Public Works, Waste Management Division is actively seeking a Refuse Collection Supervisor.
The Refuse Collection Supervisor will be responsible for supervising the safe and efficient collection of solid waste from residential and commercial properties throughout the City of Norfolk while ensuring compliance to federal, state, and local health and environmental regulations.
The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk's citizens, businesses, and visitors, including the City's Storm Water System, Street Network, Waste Management and Recycling Systems.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Supervises crew activity by issuing daily assignments, making sure the crew is properly uniformed, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures, monitoring the efficiency of refuse collection, cross-training employees on various equipment, conducting performance evaluations, and investigating and resolving complaints.
Plans routes by selecting areas that are best for either automated or semi
automated trucks and have the most collection locations, and assigning crews to routes based on the availability of personnel and equipment.
Maintains equipment by checking for cleanliness, defects, and fuel, reporting malfunctions to mechanics, and ensuring that all equipment receives preventative maintenance, ensuring DMV required Pre-Trip and Post-Trip inspections are completed on refuse collection vehicles.
Interacts with citizens explaining refuse collection codes and procedures.
Performs environmental inspections.
Inspects property for placement of bulk refuse containers to meet Fire, Zoning, and Health Department codes, to issue permits required by the city for placement of those containers.
Must possess the ability to operate modern office equipment, Microsoft Office software to create and log reports.
Requires exceptional customer service skills to interact with citizens explaining refuse collection codes and procedures.
Requires the ability to sit/stand for extended periods of time, lift, push, pull, bend, stoop, climb and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.
Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources.
Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
Five years' experience in refuse collection or related with supervisory experience.
Ability to operate rear loading, side-loading, knuckle boom and automated refuse collection equipment.
Additional Information & Requirements
Valid CDL Driver's License
CPR Certification.
Work Hours: Tuesday – Friday, 7:00 am – 5:30 pm, 40 hours per week.
(May require working overtime and most holidays).
