The Director of Nursing reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.
Supporting a person-centered model of care, the Director of Nursing is responsible for the day-to-day operational processes, staffing, and organization of the nursing department.
Incumbent supervises nursing supervisors, clinc and appointment staff, respiratory therapists, unit nursing specialists, and infection control nurse.
The DON ensures compliance with nursing policies and the standards of practice expected from our nurses.
Responsible for 24/7 staffing, interviewing and hiring, coordinating training needs based on performance and experience, and maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations governing clinical programs provided by an ICF/IID.
-Creates nursing department strategy to meet the Home’s objectives and mission.
-Provides oversight of the nursing department, including nursing supervisors, infection control nurse, unit nurse specialists, appointment nurse, clinic nurse, and respiratory therapists.
-Serves as a member of the senior leadership team, collaborates, and works well with other senior leaders.
-Collaborates with the CFO to develop, adhere to and monitor budgetary requirements for the nursing department.
-Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of Federal and State regulations that apply to the Home’s operations and the nursing department specifically.
-Acts as the primary liaison between St.
Mary’s Nursing Department, CHKD, Sentara Leigh Hospital, physician practices, and other external providers on nursing and medical issues.
-Actively participates in quality assurance and improvement activities including performance and outcomes review, incident reviews, corrective action, and improvement planning.
-Collaborates with the Director of Residential Services to ensure the health and wellness of residents remains a top priority and necessary medical support is carried out.
-Works closely with the Director of Professional Development to make sure nursing staff are trained and retrained at least annually in those areas mandated by the State or our licensing agency, as well as introducing new enhancements to providing quality nursing service to the individuals served here.
-Collaborates with Human Resources and participates in employee corrective actions, consulting with managers, meeting with employees, determining the level of corrective action.
-Listens to staff concerns and works toward resolution.
-Assists with staff recruitment and hiring.
-Is knowledgeable of Federal, State, and DMAS regulations as well as St.
Mary’s Home policies and procedures and ensures regulations and policies are enforced -Creates, implements, and supports corrective action plans as necessary to ensure compliance with licensing and legal requirements.
-Establishes relationships and communicates with residents, family members, authorized representatives, and other stakeholders.
-Participates in pre-admission assessment adhering to admission criteria -Facilitates nursing aspect of discharge from the organization.
-Responsible for quality management of care of the individuals served here.
-Participates in the Home’s strategic planning and implementation of strategic initiatives.
-Establishes and monitors staffing needs of the nursing department.
-Works with scheduler to schedule nursing personnel.
-Other duties as assigned; works a flexible schedule including working as a floor nurse or working a different shift (infrequently) in order to monitor nursing performance.
Qualification: Education/licensure: Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program; has a current Virginia RN license; masters in nursing management preferred Skills: Demonstrates strong leadership qualities and characteristics; effective communication and strong organizational skills; able to perform a thorough pediatric nursing assessment.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years med-surgical or pediatric experience, and 2 years nursing management/supervisory experience required; long-term care experience preferred.
PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB: Must be able to sit, stand and walk for variable periods of time.
Must be able to lift 35 pounds independently.
Must be able to use lifting and mobility equipment necessary to care for the individuals served.
This is a full time, exempt position, which requires a flexible work schedule which may require availability for work during the weekend and at night.
