Description
The City of Norfolk’s Department of Public Works is seeking an Engineering Technician II within the Division of Design.
This position is responsible for providing technical assistance to Public Works projects.
Producing and updating site plans, floor plans, maps, roadways/bike paths, construction drawings, and project specifications.
Maintains flat files and digital records of architectural, civil, and structural drawings.
Aids Public Works primarily using AutoCAD, Graphic Information Systems and Project Management software(eBuilder).
The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk’s citizens, businesses, and visitors, including the City’s storm water system, street network, waste management and recycling systems.
The Department is comprised of 8 divisions that function collectively to make your commute safe and efficient, your neighborhood more attractive, and the streets and sidewalks clean and well-maintained.
The Design Division procures and manages design and construction for over $100 million in Capital Improvement Projects.
These projects include new or rehabilitative work to City buildings, bridges, bulkheads, streets and drainage systems, parking garages, parks, beaches, navigational channels, and other infrastructure.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $45,013.

Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Provide customer service, technical support and assistance to internal and external stakeholders.
Prepare graphics for reports, signage, and presentations.
Produce hard copies and distribute information for review.
Create, record and maintain digital drawings and files.
Provide floor plans, furniture layouts, site plans, roadways/bike paths, and construction drawings.
Furnish maps, plans, underground utility locations, and other information to the public, contractors, utility companies, and consultants.
Identify project requirements and interpret research material in conjunction with field data.
Calculate data for verification and draft in preparation of drawings.
Produce digital contract or construction drawings, plans, and specifications via AutoCAD and associative engineering programs.
Interprets City Standards to create layouts, choose typestyles, sizes, and colors for architectural graphics.
Perform analysis to ensure the validity of information.
Check data for accuracy and assimilate data into Geographical Information Systems.
Gather, interpret, and condense information into Project Management software, eBuilder.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months of advanced study or equivalent experience.
Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
One year of experience in drafting, GIS, sub-professional engineering or a directly related field.
Preferred Education/Experience:
Coursework in Engineering Technology, Geographic Information Systems, Information Technology, and Project Management.
